Job 5:19 – betydning

Job 5:19 2026-10-28

Seks Gange redder han dig i Trængsel, syv gaar Ulykken uden om dig;

Hvad det betyder

Job 5:19 is spoken by Eliphaz, one of Job's friends, who tells Job that God will rescue him from many hardships, even seven, so that no real harm will finally reach him. The 'six... yes, seven' pattern is a Hebrew way of saying 'many' or 'a full measure' of trouble. It is important to read this in context: Eliphaz's speech assumes that suffering is a sign of wrongdoing and that repentance brings restoration. The book of Job itself challenges that view, so the verse is best understood as one friend's confident claim, not the final word of the book.

Til i dag

Many people today read this verse and hear a promise that a good life will be shielded from harm, which is hard to square with a layoff, a divorce, a diagnosis, or a child's struggles. It can feel like a comforting slogan that makes suffering seem like a personal failure. A more honest reading is that the verse expresses a hope for deliverance during trouble, while the wider story of Job asks what we do when that deliverance does not come on our terms. In a culture that sells self-optimization and promises that effort guarantees safety, the verse can remind us to be careful about blaming people who are hurting.

Til at tage med

Hold on to the hope that trouble does not have the last word, while staying gentle with yourself and others when life hurts in ways that no one deserves.
